Foreword
New Mexico is a land of magnificent scenery and soul-satisfying beauty. It is a country, too, of strange contrasts, a land of mystery.
Here are friendly vistas of sun-filled valleys and snow-capped peaks. Here are evidences of Nature in her most brilliant splendor, and in her most terrifying tantrums.
Here are three great cultures, Indian, Spanish and Anglo, separate and distinct, but blending without antagonism or conflict.
D. H. Lawrence once wrote that “New Mexico was the greatest experience from the outside world that I have ever had.”
No one book can completely tell the story or wholly interpret New Mexico. This collection is offered only as an introduction. It is an effort to provide a sample of the flavor, the romance, the fascination that is this “Land of Enchantment.” The editor hopes that it will whet the interest of readers so they will want to see more of, and read more about the State.
The selections have been made from past issues of New Mexico Magazine for a dozen years. Some of the authors are widely known, others little known. They all have one thing in common, an appreciation and love for New Mexico. George Fitzpatrick
