From the Preface
There is an understated yet forthright honesty in the art of Maynard Dixon. For over fifty years his pen, pencil, and paintbrush transferred to paper and canvas his strong emotional involvement with the people and landscape of the American West.
Although there had been several retrospectives of Maynard Dixon’s art in past years, all had emphasized his paintings above his drawings. Drawing was the constant foundation of Dixon’s creativity throughout his long career.
This project was aided immeasurably by the constant enthusiasm, knowledge, and insight of Edith Hamlin, widow of Maynard Dixon. In addition, her generosity in presenting a key group of sixteen works to The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco insures that a cross section of Maynard Dixon’s drawings always will be available to be enjoyed by the people of the Bay Area.
