PREFACE: “The scope and character of any given collection tends to reflect, to a surprising degree, the mental outlook of the collector. Some make selections as whimsy dictates. Some care only for rarities or perhaps are more concerned with quantity, excluding all other considerations. Fortunately, there are others possessing a more orderly type of mind who strive to bring together material, not only for their own enjoyment but which may eventually serve the less fortunate as a means of added knowledge and inspiration.
“An outstanding example, coming with this latter category, is the collection of textiles of Mr. Alfred I. Barton of Miami Beach, Florida. It was planned by the owner, from its inception, to illustrate all of the various weaves of the historic period, native to the Southwest, with particular emphasis on blanketry and similar forms. These include Pueblo, Navajo and Spanish-American loomwork.
“In assembling the collection, it is very obvious that no effort has been spared in choosing fitting examples to represent the different phases and styles occurring in the chronological sequences of development. Esthetic values and physical condition have been prerequisites for inclusion in every instance.”
