The Santa Fe Railway was a pioneer in the corporate purchase of art works. Within the very first years of the twentieth century the railway company began commissioning artists to depict the West. This activity was 70 years in advance of the widespread interest in corporate art collecting, a remarkable achievement.
The seventy-two paintings selected from the Santa Fe Railway Company Collection of Southwestern Art for this exhibition exemplify the Southwest’s vitality and earthy charm. Most of the works were produced by artists resident in the Santa Fe and Taos art-literary colonies—nine depict the Grand Canyon; ten interpret Navajo ethnicity; thirty-six are of the Santa Fe-Taos setting; and eighteen are peripheral Southwestern scenes. Thirty-three artists were included in the exhibition.
Each painting is illustrated in full color and each painting was given a full-page presentation.
