FOREWORD
“Indian legends are not always easy to understand, for small details are very likely to carry much meaning. For the non-Indian reader, I have tried to simplify and explain some things more than Old Father did for his listeners.
“I was one of the fortunate children of my generation who were probably the last to hear stories firsthand from Great-grandfather or Grandfather. I treasure that memory, and I have tried to preserve it in this book so that my children as well as other people may have a glimpse of what used to be.
“Credit is due my father, Herman Velarde, of Santa Clara Pueblo, for refreshing my memory on many points. I am grateful for it, and for having such a wonderful man as my father. All I can say here is kuda whyo-ha, thanks, in our Tewa tongue.
“My kuda whyo-ha to friends for their help and encouragement, and to my children, Helen and Herby, for their love and faith.”
