NAVAJO BLANKETS catalog
Matchin & Ambrose (Trading Post), Crown Point, New Mexico
Paperback, 8 pages, undated. Red cover with Indian image. Inside cover with photograph of a baby in a cradleboard entitled “Snug as a Bug in a Rug.” Illustrated with black and white and color photographs.
This is a mail order catalog from the Matchin & Ambrose Trading Post. It has some history of Navajo weaving and offers blankets for sale, described as Fancy and Extra Fancy grades and shows a rug that was a blue ribbon winner at the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial in 1925. Prices shown in the catalog range from $12 to $1000. Rugs of Ordinary Grades are less expensive, ranging from $6 to $200.
There is one page devoted to the jewelry made by Navajo, with a photograph of a number of items of jewelry. The inside back cover lists items of jewelry and price ranges for those items.
Condition: the red cover got wet in the past and some of the red color bled into the pages of the catalog but all pages are readable. This is a very rare early trading post catalog.
