“La Danse des Kachina” - Pavillon des Arts, Les musées de la Ville de Paris

A collection of Hopi Katsinas from the French Surrealists.

From the back cover:

In the mythology of the Hopi and Zuni Indians, in the Southwest United States, the Kachina are spirits: spirits of fire, rain, snake, or even mischievous, benevolent or evil prankster spirits... A golden inventory of the visible and invisible world. Six months a year, on the occasion of ritual festivals, these spirits are embodied in masked and costumed dancers. Colorful and expressive dolls — also called Kachina and representing these dancers — are offered to children so that they become familiar with the world of spirits. The Surrealists and their friends were among the first to take an interest in the sculpture of the Hopi and Zuni Indians and to collect Kachina. Exceptionally brought together, the collections of Andrea Breton, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Andre Malraux, Matta, Jorge Camacho are here, among others, unveiled for the first time.
