KACHINAS / SAINTS a Contrast in Style and Culture
George Mills, Assistant Director, Taylor Museum
Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center
Softcover, 50 pages, illustrated in color and black and white
The making of santos as a folk art lasted from one hundred to one hundred and fifty years. It began some time following the reconquest of New Mexico in 1693 and continued until about the middle of the 19th century. We do not know when the carving of kachinas, an art still vital to the Pueblo people, was initiated but it is probably of fairly recent origin. This exhibit compared the Spanish santos and the Pueblo katsinas.
