Summary
This is the second volume to be published of a 20-volume set planned to give an encyclopedic summary of what is known about the prehistory, history, and cultures of the aboriginal peoples of North America who lived to the north of the urban civilizations of central Mexico. Volumes 5-14 treat the other major culture areas of the region.
The aim of this volume is to describe the history, cultural background, and present circumstances of the Indian peoples of the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. Because of the lack of any single, uniform set of ethnographies covering this area, the authors of this volume decided that the tribal sketches should be as detailed as possible; hence more space has been assigned to these chapters than is the case with some other volumes of the Handbook. Covered are tribes from the Coastal Region, Saint Lawrence Lowlands Region, and Great Lakes-Rivertine Region.
