Description: Hardcover full leather covered boards. Folio format, pages i-xix, 1-153 plus colophon and errata. Limited to 228 copies. Originally published to accompany a suite of reprints of Curtis photos from the original plates on the Southwest tribes. Both the Plains and Southwest Tribe portfolios of photos were published, but only this one book of selected text was completed. Frontispiece is a sepia photogravure of Curtis's well-known self-portrait (there are no other illustrations).
The text has been abridged from Volumes I, II, XII, XVI, and XVII of original Curtis The North American Indian and was printed by letterpress by The Amaranth Press of San Francisco on Italian handmade paper. Classic Gravure of Santa Fe, New Mexico, discovered and purchased the original Curtis glass plate negatives in Boston, Massachusetts, and intended to reprint the entire 20-volumes using the original Curtis plates. This is the only volume they produced before going out of business.
