After graduating from Stanford University in 1958, Richard  Spivey joined the family business as general manager and later president of Spivey Coffee Shops in San Jose. In 1969, he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he became a dealer in Pueblo Indian pottery. Richard served as past president of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts and vice president on the board of trustees of the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.

Author Richard L. Spivey (1937 - 2011) was the author of Maria, The Legacy of Maria Poveka Martinez, and co-author with Charles King: The Life and Art of Tony Da, along with various other articles and museum publications.
