These reports from the Regents were prepared for the Congress of the United States. They reported on all the Smithsonian’s various museums. They also published reports on the many experiments and studies conducted by the museums. This report has 32 appendices on subjects ranging from cosmology, plants and animals, earthquakes, gems, etc. There are three appendices that are appropriate for our interests:
Our Heritage from the American Indians by W. E. Safford. 12 black and white photographic plates. Describes the various plants and materials, medicines and herbs, fabrics and clothing, from which our civilization has benefitted from the earlier cultures.
The Kachina Altars in Hopi Worship by Jesse Walter Fewkes. This is the fifth of a series published in the annual reports of the Smithsonian Institution on the composition of Hopi worship.
Omaha Bow and Arrow Makers by Francis La Flesche. 4 beautiful photographic plates. The bow, with its arrow, was the most effective weapon known to the North American Indians. This report describes the various tribes and their weapons.
Condition: the title page is loose from the binding, otherwise the book is in very good condition.
