A GUIDE TO HOPI KATSINA CARVINGS
Written by Rose Houk
Western National Parks Association, Tucson
Small format booklet, soft cover, 48 pages, beautifully illustrated with photographs of 20 katsina dolls with explanatory text.
From winter solstice until midsummer each year, the benevolent spirits called katsinam live among the Hopi on their three mesas in northern Arizona. The katsinam, central to Hopi religion, are given form as wooden carvings popularly known as “katsina dolls.”
This booklet is a good introduction to the meaning and use of katsina dolls and an easily understandable explanation of katsina ceremonies. It is well written and illustrated.
