From the Jacket
“During the last thirty years the Navaho [Navajo] People, the largest tribe of Indians in North America, have been faced with a growing necessity for change. Their traditional mode of living—simple, carefree, undisturbed by the great pressures of our complex civilization—has been altered by their adaptation to an utterly alien existence. Old customs are disappearing, and, though this is inevitable, one regrets the loss of a colorful and idyllic life.
“In this book, representing research done mainly in the past fifteen years, Laura Gilpin intends to record in picture and word as much as possible of the old life and the relation of these people to their beautiful land, while at the same time revealing the strong character of the Navaho as they seek their place in a modern world. She has been highly successful in accomplishing her aim.
“The Enduring Navaho is a fascinating book, its photographs capturing the spirit and feel of the land and the people as they have seldom if ever been captured before. The text, an excellent complement to the photographs, is good reading—informative and sympathetic. The personal reminiscences of the author’s experiences among the people are particularly captivating.”
