RIO GRANDE TEXTILES A New Edition of Spanish Textile Tradition of New Mexico and Colorado

Compiled and edited by Nora Fisher

Museum of International Folk Art

Museum of New Mexico Press, Santa Fe

Softcover, 196 pages, illustrated in color. This 1994 book is a new edition of the publication Spanish Textile Tradition of New Mexico and Colorado, 1979. Excellent condition.

The original publication of the classic Spanish Textile Tradition of New Mexico and Colorado (Museum of New Mexico Press, 1979) was a pioneering study in the splendid textile production of the Rio Grande Valley.  In the fifteen years since the book appeared, weavers of traditional Hispanic textiles have confirmed their roots in a centuries-old art while producing some of the finest contemporary textiles available.

The new edition, now entitled Rio Grande Textiles, presents one hundred twenty-five of the finest examples of historical and contemporary Hispanic weaving in full-color reproduction.  This edition, featuring a new introduction, an entirely new design, and fine, state-of-the-art reproduction quality, will enable a new generation of readers and artists to enjoy one of New Mexico’s most treasured traditional arts.

From the Inside Cover:

To mention weavings from the southwestern United States is to conjure up the image of Indian textiles. Apart from specialists, few persons are aware that a rich tradition with its own characteristics, introduced by the early Spanish settlers along the Rio Grande, developed parallel with that of the Native American.

This publication is the culmination of a project which was conceived in 1967 by the late E. Boyd, who was Curator of Spanish Colonial Art at the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, from 1951 until her death in September 1974. The basis of the project was to gather information on Spanish weavings as distinct from Indian textiles of the Southwest in the collections of museums in the United States and to publish the data in a Union Catalogue, which would be a valuable tool for further research.
