The word Moccasin just happened because the Algonquin people along the New England coast told the first white settlers the name of their footwear. The word has since been used to identify the leather footwear of most of the Indian people in North America.
Most of the Moccasins were made of soft tanned leather; there are some exceptions, but for the most part the tanning process was basically the same with all peoples. The fleshing (removing all tissue, fats and flesh on the inside of the hide was necessary in all cases. Hair was removed or left on, depending on its intended use. If hair was to be removed, the standard method was to chop or scrape the hair off. This method always removed the outer
