+ Add Artist to My Preferences

Sonja K. Ayres was born in Fort Smith, AR.  She moved to California at an early age and drawing was always a form of entertainment for her as she was growing up in McFarland, CA.  Winning her first art award in the fifth grade put her into the competitive mode, and she still loves competing in various art exhibits.

Throughout her childhood years, she would visit family in Oklahoma and Arkansas and always felt a connection to the area.  As an adult, she moved her own family back “home”.

Sonja started painting in 1970 and continues to skillfully paint many subjects today.  Native American, horses, landscapes and fly fishing scenes are some of her favorites, and she is a highly sought after portrait artist.  Sonja was inducted into the Master Artist program at Five Civilized Tribes Museum in 2010.

She teaches art and pottery-making workshops in several local school districts.  She also enjoys teaching adult painting classes in the evenings.

"I love being an artist.  I've had a wonderful life.  I am blessed to be living in Oklahoma and enjoying all the natural scenery in Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas."  - Sonja K. Ayres
