+ Add Artist to My Preferences
Darren Vigil Gray, Jicarilla Apache/Kiowa Apache painter, began studying art in 1975 in the high school program of the Institute of American Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He then went to the College of Santa Fe and the University of New Mexico, but by 1986 he had given up academics in favor of painting full time.
Gray has been inspired by a number of artists over the years. Among them are T. C. Cannon, William de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Elmer Bischoff.
He draws with paint after the Abstract Expressionists, who believe that a painting is never truly finished. He works and re-works a painting until he finally is pleased with it.
