These vintage turquoise and silver Zuni style cluster earrings feature a beautiful center flower from which a delicate dangle hangs. The unknown artist cut multiple pieces of turquoise and set them in tiny bezels. What makes this pair unique is that the small segments of gemstone rise above the bezel, making the intense blue color of the turquoise stand out.
The style of setting many small pieces of turquoise, coral, and shell is referred to as “cluster work”. Because it involves a great deal of lapidary skill to create cluster work, the style originated at Zuni Pueblo where artisans had been shaping stone for centuries. It is one of the most popular styles of jewelry, both within the Native American community and with collectors. Because of the high demand and the aesthetic appeal, Diné jewelers also began making jewelry in this style in the mid twentieth century. Because of this, unless the work is signed, it is impossible to know if the item is Zuni or Diné. So, while we may say the artist was Zuni, it is indeed possible that the artisan was Diné.
These striking cluster earrings are unsigned and date to the mid-twentieth century.
Condition: The earrings are in excellent condition.
Provenance: these Zuni Vintage Turquoise and Silver Cluster Earrings with Dangles are from a Colorado collection
