Zuni beaded figurine maker Bessie Boone was 87 years old when she created this seven-piece nacimiento. Making beaded figurines is a painstaking, demanding task and Bessie was an extremely skillful bead worker. This diorama is a testament to her amazing skill.
The diorama features seven fully beaded figures. Mary and Joseph face a small baby Jesus who is set in a traditional Zuni Pueblo cradleboard. Above the Holy Family, Bessie placed a hovering angel with wings aflutter. Two shepherds watch over the family with one of their sheep. The figures are attached to the floor of the stable. Bessie has formed a wooden ramada overhead to which a small red chile ristra is hanging. The base is signed and dated with her age.
