The Knifewing is a revered figure in Zuni Pueblo culture, depicted as part man, part eagle, and part thunderbird. A powerful warrior spirit, he embodies strength, agility, and protection, playing a central role in Zuni ceremonies, stories, and rituals.
Zuni Knifewing jewelry emerged in the early 20th century alongside the development of Zuni inlay work. While early Zuni silverwork was influenced by Navajo techniques, artists like Teddy Weahkee, Leo Poblano, and Dan Simplicio pioneered intricate mosaic and channel inlay, establishing a distinct and highly collectible style.
This exceptional vintage Zuni Knifewing pin by renowned artist Teddy Weahkee is a rare piece of Native American jewelry. Crafted with remarkable precision, this pin features high-grade Blue Gem turquoise intricately hand-carved and inlaid alongside mother of pearl, jet, and shell. A true testament to Weahkee's mastery, the mother of pearl has been meticulously filed to create fine feather-like scalloped edges, a distinctive detail in the wing and tail feathers that sets this piece apart.
Teddy Weahkee (ca. 1890-1965) was one of the foremost inlay artists and carvers of the 1930s-1950s, credited with pioneering intricate inlay work in the 20th century. His exceptional craftsmanship was highly sought by collectors, including C.G. Wallace, a prominent trader and patron of Zuni artistry. Many of Weahkee's works are now part of prestigious museum collections, including the Heard Museum and the Smithsonian.
This piece is unsigned, as was customary for jewelry of this era. Signature markings were not commonly used until around the 1950s, first adopted by Navajo artists and later by Zuni and Hopi jewelers. Every hand-cut stone and shell element in this pin is original and of exceptional quality, making it a standout example of Zuni jewelry and a true collector's item.
Documentation attesting to the authenticity and value of this pin accompanies the sale.
