This Katsina doll appears to be exactly like the Zuni Shulawitsi and the Hopi Kokosori, except for the light blue body color, but the artisan has labeled it Zuni Moon God Kachina on the underside of the pedestal.
The Shulawitsi in blue is one of the little dancers who come during the winter series. He does not wear the old mask and may come in any of the colors of the cardinal direction. The impersonation is more of a reminder of the actual Shulawitsi who appears at Shalako and during initiation.
The carving is very well executed by Zuni Pueblo carver Ben Seciwa. Body proportions are more true to life than most Zuni carvings. The artisan put turquoise chips on the chest and back and added beaded jaclas to complete the jewelry. It is in very good condition.
Provenance: this Zuni Pueblo Moon God Katsina is from a collector in Oregon to whom we sold this doll in 2004
