As described by Harlow and Lanmon in the Pottery of Zia Pueblo, there was a period in Zia pottery production, beginning in the1880s, when two styles of arc designs were in use.  One they named Reflected Arcs appeared between 1880 and 1900 and the other Rainbow Arcs in use between 1880 and 1930.  Reflected arcs generally were designs within arcs that were connected at their ends.  The Rainbow arcs are familiar even today as the undulating arcs traversing over some design areas and under others.

This large Zia storage jar contains both of these arc designs.  On opposing sides are arcs with smaller attached arcs that surround a black bird and a few floral elements.  The double rainbow arcs hover over orange birds on opposing sides.  The jar dates to the turn of the century and is an absolute wonderful example of a storage jar that was used for decades.

There are excellent examples of surface wear around the rim that are probably the result of topping the jar with an upturned bowl to protect the contents.  Other wear patterns suggest that the jar was situated in an area of the home where it was brushed against occasionally which produced some areas of abrasion.  The charm of this jar, in addition to its vessel shape, high shoulder, and wonderful design elements, is the evidence of daily use for a number of decades.  This jar is a true representation of one made for home use in the pueblo and not one made for sale.  It is a pleasure to be able to present it here.
