Black-outlined undulating rainbow arcs are not documented as having occurred before 1880; however, it appears that they evolved from simpler black-outlined framing lines, pathways, zigzag segments and undulating path lines.  These elements are pictured in The Pottery of Zia Pueblo, pages 115-116 (see link below for the book).  The undulating style of rainbow arc, as in this jar, is documented in the 1900-1910 decade.

Zia birds are placed above and below the rainbow.  Each bird has two fat tail feathers and a single wing.  The entire bird is outlined in black, as is the rainbow, the latter with a double black line.  Sharing the space with the birds are floral elements, the leaves of which are black and the flowers are orange without black outlining.  There is a thin wiped-on red band under the lower double framing lines, an item often used to assist in dating a jar.

Condition:  there are a couple slip cracks on the interior bottom but they do not penetrate the wall of the jar.  A blow-out occurred during firing in the polished lower section of the jar.  The potter placed the blown out piece back into position.

Provenance: from a gentleman in California
