This polychrome water jar, or OLLA, was made by an unknown Zia Pueblo potter. We estimate that it dates to the 1940s, and it is a strong example of the work produced during this period. It is evident in this jar's form and design that the unidentified artist who made it was skilled and creative. Its form is well balanced and quite appealing. Slight variations in form appear in the curved shoulder and gently rounded underbody, which is to be expected of a hand-coiled vessel like this one.

A single design band circles the jar, covering most of the exterior with movement and energy. Within the band, a design that includes a Zia bird and a tall plant repeats four times, with the plants hanging up and over the birds to provide a pleasant continuity between each design repetition. The pigment colors are strong and beautiful, further enhancing the appeal of the composition. This piece offers much to the viewer who appreciates striking color and elegant composition.

Condition: excellent condition, blacklight examination reveals no restoration or repair

Provenance: this Zia Pueblo Polychrome OLLA ca. 1940s is from a private collection
