Woody Crumbo spent his life devoted to the celebration and appreciation of Native American art and culture. Not only was he a painter and printmaker whose work can be seen in museums across the country, he worked to promote the art of other Native artists as a curator of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the El Paso Art Museum in El Paso, Texas.
Crumbo was known for his depictions of Native American dances as well as animal scenes. Crumbo worked in various media, including oils, but is mostly known for his silkscreens. Sometimes working with up to sixteen different screens, he produced multiple copies of the same image, with the intention of making his work more accessible to the general public.
In this silkscreen a majestic blue buck is the focal point. On either side of him are a graceful doe and a young spotted fawn. The antlers on the buck have an amazing three dimensional quality, achieved by Crumbo’s inventive use of many colored screens. The blue color of the deer give them a dreamlike quality. They are both realistic and imaginary at the same time. The artist’s name is screened into the bottom right corner.
