Rondina Huma, Hopi Pueblo Potter

How does she do it?  Is it patience, perseverance or just dogged determination?  Rondina Huma’s explanation is “I don’t want this craft to die out.  I want to keep up the pottery making, so it will keep the culture of my tribe alive.”  There you have it!

Rondina Huma (1947-) signature

Rondina Huma (1947 - ) produces the most perfect vessel, balanced in every respect and burnished to a smooth and beautiful finish.  Upon this beautiful finish, she applies a total composite design that completely conceals the base surface.  Her designs are minute or thumbnail images of Sikyatki prehistoric designs from her pueblo’s ancestral village.

It is inconceivable that a potter could have the patience to paint with natural materials and a yucca brush in such miniature scale, and to do so with such precision and accuracy.

She has deservedly been awarded the highest awards at Santa Fe Indian Market, including the overall Best of Show Award.  She certainly will continue to do so in the future.
