This stunning eight-strand coral necklace is a testament to the artistry and skill of a once renowned Kewa (Santo Domingo Pueblo) jeweler. The necklace showcases a beautiful, deep shade of coral with a variety of shapes, including cylindrical, square, and rounded. The coral beads are not overly polished, preserving their natural texture and creating a uniform, earthy look.
"One of the most beautiful coral necklaces I've ever seen." - Al Anthony, JR.
Interspersed between the coral beads every 4 to 6 inches are unique, patinaed metallic beads that appear to be handmade. These contrasting beads add visual interest to the necklace. The eight strands create a bold and impactful statement, while the absence of a clasp, secured by a well-preserved ⅜" wound cord, adds to the necklace's vintage charm.
Six small turquoise beads at the top of the necklace indicate the outward-facing side. This exquisite piece is a prime example of early to mid-twentieth-century Kewa jewelry, showcasing the innovative use of coral and the enduring allure of traditional Kewa design.
Coral, a symbol of life's beauty and vitality, has long been a cherished element in Kewa jewelry. As a rare and sought-after material, this exceptional necklace represents a significant piece of Kewa cultural heritage and a true collector's item.
