The image on each bronze bookend is a Native American with a full-feather headdress and loin cloth sitting bareback on a horse. He is an important member of the tribe as evidenced by the full headdress. He has his arms spread outward, is leaning back slightly, and has his head looking up to the sky. There are a couple of plants—trees or cactus—at the base. The outer rim of the bookend is raised to provide a frame for the image.
This early 1900s pair of bronze bookends was modeled after Cyrus Dallin’s "Appeal to the Great Spirit,” the 1908 equestrian statue now located in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The bookends have substantial weight—about 3 pounds, 11 ounces—sufficient for supporting books. The back of each is stamped with a canoe-like figure within which is the letter C, enclosed in a triangle, which, in turn, is enclosed in a circle. The specific origin of these bookends is CT Foundry, Ceres, California. This could be their foundry mark as is shown below.

Provenance: this Vintage Pair Bronze Bookends of Indian on Horseback is from the collection of a gentleman from Santa Fe
