Although Arthur W. Hall specialized in etchings and dry point in his earlier career he was always adept at sketching and painting. He was greatly influenced by years spent in Europe as well as extensive travels in the United States. As an artist he found the scenery and light in Northern New Mexico too good to pass up and in 1942 chose New Mexico as his home. With the exception of a brief period spent in Arizona he would remain here until his passing in 1981.
After receiving much acclaim and many awards for his etchings and prints he focused the latter part of his career on his painting. He primarily worked with watercolors, which is what makes this particular painting so intriguing. Executed in oil on board in 1950 right here in Santa Fe, NM the bright yellows and oranges jump out at the viewer, contrasted nicely with the cooler, darker tones of the background. This work depicts an overlook of a mountain range (Sangre de Cristo?) with aspens, evergreens and an iconic Santa Fe textured sky. It is wonderfully complemented by an intricately carved wood frame with antiqued gold leaf showing through a nice patina. It is signed Arthur W. Hall 1950 Santa Fe.
