Royston Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace and Earrings SET

This Navajo SET of silver and turquoise squash blossom necklace and earrings PAIR is a refined take on a classic form. The jewelry necklace features Royston turquoise oval cabochons in place of traditional blossom elements. The necklace measures 18 inches from clasp to the base of the naja and 30 inches end-to-end. Each side of the necklace showcases eight turquoise cabochons, complemented by a single matching cab at the center of the naja. The earrings mirror this design with matching turquoise and are fitted with hooks for pierced ears.

The piece is strung with stamped hollow silver beads, adding a subtle layer of texture and shine. The back of the naja is stamped Sterling ML, a hallmark attributed to various jewelers. What is a Naja? Early Navajo-made jewelry contained elements that were borrowed directly from Spanish colonial and Mexican ornament. One of these items is the naja, a crescent form of Moorish origin. The Spanish conquerors in the Southwest outfitted their horses in elaborate silver ornaments-one of which was the naja that hung directly on the forehead of the horse as a part of the bridle. Today, it is still seen in both Pueblo and Navajo modern jewelry.
