This striking bolo tie by renowned silversmith Frank Patania, Sr. is a bold and iconic representation of Southwest artistry. The domed medallion is masterfully inlaid with nearly 100 square turquoise chips of varying types, sizes, and hues, ranging from sky blue to emerald green, with captivating copper veining throughout. Surrounded by a finely executed silver wire wrap, the medallion is flawlessly polished to a smooth, luminous finish.

Western Artist signature and hallmark of Frank Patania, Sr. (1899-1964) Thunderbird Studio JewelryThe braided black leather cord is both sturdy and elegant, complemented by silver tips and a Bennett hinged clasp for secure wear. The back of the bolo is stamped with Patania's hallmark FP alongside his signature thunderbird symbol, marking it as an unmistakable piece of his celebrated work.

A visionary jeweler, Frank Patania, Sr. (1899-1964) was internationally renowned for blending traditional Southwestern motifs with contemporary jewelry aesthetics. As the founder of Thunderbird Studios in Santa Fe and Tucson, he set a standard of excellence that continues through his son, Frank Jr., and grandson, Sam.

With a hanging length of 21 inches and a medallion measuring 2-⅛" in height by 2" in width, this exceptional bolo is not just an accessory-it's a conversation piece and a testament to the enduring legacy of Patania's craftsmanship.  He created an innovative and thoughtful neck strap for comfort to the wearer (see below).

The bolo tie, a distinctive piece of neckwear, is widely recognized in the United States as a staple of Western attire, particularly prevalent in the country's western regions. New Mexico's appreciation for this iconic accessory is evident in its legislative history. In 1987, the state passed a non-binding resolution to designate the bolo tie as its official neckwear. This symbolic gesture was later solidified on March 13, 2007, when the State Legislature officially adopted the bolo tie as the official State Tie. (Source: Wikipedia)
