In depiction of Yei figures in sandpaintings and textiles, it has been described that male Yei representations are with square faces and female representations are with round faces. This presentation by Tony Abeyta is of a round face or female Yei. The Yei are the Supernatural Beings of the Diné.
Tony Abeyta has gone through a number of periods of change in his art presentations. This style of painting was of his 1990s period. He no longer paints in this style on a regular basis.
This is an excellent example of a major painting by Tony Abeyta from the 1990s, executed in oil, acrylic and sand.
