Stone Lithograph “Protestors”

The artwork portrays a group of demonstrators, a scene reminiscent of the 1960s protests in the United States. Swazo Hinds masterfully employed a relaxed approach to detail to depict the subject matter. The faces in the painting are powerful, albeit lacking in detail, and the entire piece is rendered in brown ink.

Throughout his career, Swazo Hinds created a series of stone lithographs at the Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. This particular piece is one of them, numbered 12 out of an edition of 75. It was crafted in 1974 using brown ink on buff Arches Cover paper. Four lithographs from this series were initially printed on a single sheet of paper, which was then torn apart to separate them, resulting in deckled edges. The printmaker for this project was Ben Q. Adams. These four lithographs were the final pieces Swazo produced at Tamarind before his premature passing at the age of 45.

Patrick Swazo Hinds was adopted by a family in California when he was nine years old. Although he grew up away from the reservation, he would return to Tesuque every summer. This exposure to a different lifestyle likely influenced his unique artistic style, which in turn contributed to his broad appeal and significant success as an artist.
