Stone Lithograph “Mother and Child”
Patrick Swazo Hinds, a remarkable Tesuque Pueblo painter, stands out as one of the most exceptional artists among the pueblo community. Adopted by a California family at the age of nine, Swazo spent his formative years away from the reservation, returning to Tesuque Pueblo each summer. This exposure to a contrasting lifestyle likely shaped his unique artistic style, contributing to his broad appeal and significant success.
Swazo Hinds diverged from the conventional two-dimensional style of The Studio of the Santa Fe Indian School. He also did not adhere to the abstract style popularized by Fritz Scholder and other artists from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). Instead, he carved out his own niche, blending elements of realism and modernism in his artwork.
During his career, Patrick Swazo Hinds (1929-1974) produced a series of stone lithographs at the Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. This image, number 12 of an edition of 75, was executed in 1974 using brown ink on buff Arches Cover paper. This piece was part of a set of four lithographs printed together on a single sheet of paper, which was then torn apart to separate the individual pieces, leaving deckled edges. The printmaker for this project was Ben Q. Adams. Tragically, these four lithographs were the last ones Swazo produced at Tamarind before his untimely death at the age of 45.
The other lithographs that comprise this set of four are shown at the bottom of this page as Related Items. You can also click on his signature, too.
Condition: this image is in original excellent condition. It has been framed using all acid-free materials and a strong and bold dark brown frame. The paper was floated so that the deckled edges are exposed and none of the paper is under a matboard.
Provenance: this Tesuque Pueblo Stone Lithograph "Mother and Child" by Patrick Swazo Hinds is from the collection of a resident of Santa Fe
