This beautifully crafted Tasap Kachin Mana by Jonathan Day, Sr. (b. 1951) Dep Kuy Va is a stunning representation of the iconic Hopi katsina. Carved from a single piece of cottonwood, it showcases exquisite attention to detail in both her clothing and accessories, reflecting the traditional attire of a Navajo woman.
She is adorned in a skirt, a blouse, and a turquoise necklace with jaclas, embodying the Diné (Navajo) style. Her earrings feature traditional jaclas, worn in the original manner. Around her waist, she wears a traditional Navajo-style concho belt.
Her hair is styled in a chonga, tied and spilling gracefully down her back, with three large feathers accentuating her headdress. A pair of upright feathers emerge from the chonga, adding to her regal appearance. She carries a traditional basket in her hands, poised in a dancing position.
Signed Jonathan Day 91 on the base, this carving captures the essence of Hopi artistry and the cultural bridge between Hopi and Navajo traditions, making it a remarkable addition to any collection.
