Rick Dillingham’s ceramic works, completed while he was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of New Mexico from 1970-1974, was mostly stoneware pottery thrown on a wheel. He later abandoned stoneware and the potter’s wheel and began using natural clay to hand coil vessels in the pueblo manner.
This globular jar is stoneware executed on a potter’s wheel. It was signed and dated 1971, so was an early work while he was attending UNM. It is an excellent example of his work. There are glazes in blue, cream, and brown tones applied by hand to achieve a variety of designs.
Dillingham passed away in January 1994. The University Art Museum of the University of New Mexico hosted an opening reception on June 3, 1994 of a retrospective exhibition of works by Dillingham, featuring 40 works spanning some 20 years of his career. He was, and still is, a highly respected ceramic artist and respected as a researcher and publisher of Pueblo Indian pottery. He authored two books on Native artists and their works (see below).
Rick Dillingham became an internationally recognized ceramic artist. His works reside in the collections of The Victoria Albert Museum in London; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The National Museum of American Art, Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; The Brooklyn Museum; and the Fine Arts Museum in Santa Fe.
