Joseph DeVern Coriz: A Master of Silversmithing and Goldsmithing
This silver platform serving as the base for the design elements of this bolo is also a platform for designs. In the lower half of the silver are deer and buffalo, stars, an arrow, and moons, all of which are elevated above the background. On the upper half of the platform is a turtle that is raised above the back by 1/8 inch. The body of the turtle features deer, sun, and moon symbols. Some of the moons on both sections of the platform are silver and some are finished in gold. The silver tips each have a round tip covered with designs. The leather is thick and black with a herringbone weave. The back of the silver platform is stamped JDC Sterling 14K.
Joseph DeVern Coriz ( b.1956) is a master silversmith and goldsmith from Kewa Pueblo. He began producing jewelry in 1985. He is known for fine traditional and contemporary styles, however his favorite is creating a story for each piece of work. There is a story in the imagery of this bolo silverwork with a variety of wild animals and celestial objects.
