This five-gemstone turquoise and silver bracelet contains all the elements that made Frank Patania’s two Thunderbird Shops popular destinations for tourists and locals alike. Artists at the Patania Shops in Santa Fe and Tucson incorporated traditional Navajo and Pueblo designs, but filtered through a modernist lens. The smooth lines and unique texturing of this bracelet make a beautiful frame for five stunning cabochons of turquoise. The deep hued gemstones are set interspersed between drops of silver. The sides of the bracelet are finely textured with a geometric design.
The distinctive style of Frank Patania Sr. was a major influence on the look and quality of Southwestern jewelry. Throughout the twentieth century, numerous influences affected the look of Native American jewelry. Of these influences, the work of Patania and the silversmiths at the Thunderbird Shops in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Tucson, Arizona is notable. Unlike the more regional designs of the Fred Harvey Company, Patania’s work appealed to travelers who wanted jewelry that would be fashionable in cities nationwide as well as locally. The bracelet has the hallmark of Frank Patania, Sr. with the Thunderbird stamp.
