Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Signatures of both Maria Martinez and Popovi Da, San Ildefonso PottersThis sienna jar, crafted by Maria Martinez and Popovi Da in 1966, stands as both an artistic and technical masterpiece. Meticulously formed, painted, and fired, the jar showcases Popovi Da's exceptional firing skills, resulting in its stunning sienna color. The expertly painted Avanyu design gracefully encircles the jar's shoulder, while the lower half remains polished sienna, highlighting the exquisite craftsmanship.

The collaborative period between Maria Martinez and her son Popovi Da, from 1956 to 1970, is celebrated as the pinnacle of creativity and genius for this talented duo. Popovi Da, driven by his desire to innovate rather than merely replicate existing patterns, brought a fresh perspective to pottery design. He experimented with new techniques, refined firing methods, introduced the sienna color to his work, and achieved an unparalleled level of perfection. His contributions also included new designs that set their work apart.

Popovi's wife, Anita, remarked, "He was a born artist. Because of his high standards-seeking perfection in his material, in craftsmanship, and in design—his output was limited. Other factors in the limited output were his desire to further his mother's work; time spent for the welfare of his people; and public appearances as an internationally known ceramist and watercolor artist" (Spivey, 2003).

In their collaborative process, Popovi worked closely with Maria on every aspect of pottery preparation, and their pieces were co-signed. His goal was to support his mother without overshadowing her. He planned to pursue his own pottery career after Maria retired, but he sadly passed away in 1971, prompting Maria to retire as well.

Pottery created by Maria in collaboration with others, including her husband Julian, daughter-in-law Santana, and son Popovi Da, is all recognized under Maria Martinez's name.
