Santo Domingo Small Storage Jar with Blue Pigment

This Santo Domingo small storage jar, dating to the c.1910, measures 11-½ inches wide by 13 inches in diameter and reflects both utilitarian function and striking visual form. Larger than typical water jars, its size places it firmly in the category of a small storage jar, likely used in a domestic setting. The vessel is distinguished by soft bluish areas — possibly cobalt oxide — applied near the shoulder. While rare in Pueblo pottery, cobalt may have been introduced through trade and used here for personal identification, adding a subtle but intriguing layer of individuality. The form features a high shoulder and a gracefully curved neck adorned with rain cloud motifs. The body, its widest point, provides ample space for bold black triangle designs arranged in a continuous band. A single framing line separates the neck and body designs, emphasizing the thoughtful composition. Finished with a red slip base and painted red slip interior, this jar also shows light abrasions near the bottom — evidence of daily use that adds to its authenticity and character.

Condition: very good condition, with some abrasions on the lower portion consistent with use.
