This beautifully formed Santo Domingo jar, measuring 10 inches in height by 8-¾ inches in diameter, is a striking example of early work attributed to the Aguilar sisters of Kewa Pueblo. Likely created before they developed their distinctive polychrome style, this black-on-cream piece adheres to traditional Kewa aesthetics while offering clear indications of the Aguilars' emerging artistic voice.

The graceful form of the vessel — elegantly rounded with a classic profile — is one of the hallmarks often used to identify their early work. The use of bold black pigments is another strong indicator. Three design bands encircle the jar: two at the neck and a third stretching from the shoulder down to the red-painted lower third of the body. The middle band features the iconic sine-wave design, a recognizable element closely associated with the Aguilar sisters.

Each design element repeats rhythmically across the jar, separated by framing lines that include ceremonial breaks. At these points, vertical lines run from the base to the rim, creating sharp right-angled blocks on one side of the jar. The overall composition is both bold and refined, combining technical mastery with aesthetic sophistication — an ideal pairing for the vessel's impressive form.

This jar reflects a transitional moment in the Aguilars' careers, when innovation met tradition, and their unique style began to take shape within the boundaries of ancestral design.

Condition: Very good condition consistent with its age, with one popped-out chip on the shoulder caused by a pebble in the clay during firing (see below).
