Santa Clara Pueblo artist Margaret Gutierrez came from a family of famous and outstanding potters. She carried on the tradition started by her parents, Lela and Van Gutierrez. Although Lela and Van did not make nacimientos, Margaret expanded the repertoire of the family but retained the colorful pigments used. This nacimiento contains eleven pieces. There are Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, his cradle, three kings bearing gifts, and four animals.
Margaret Gutierrez (1936-2018) was a member of the famous Gutierrez family from Santa Clara Pueblo Her parents, Lela and Van Gutierrez, were responsible for developing the design style continued by Margaret and her older brother Luther. Following Luther's death in 1987, Margaret continued making pottery by herself. Margaret's twin brother, Paul Gutierrez made pottery with his wife Dorothy. The children of these siblings also are potters.

Provenance: from a nacimiento collector in North Carolina who purchased it in 1999.
