Eudora Montoya is the most well recognized potter from Santa Ana Pueblo. It was she who, in 1972, began teaching Santa Ana women the art of pottery making. She had 17 students in her first class. Only 5 or 6 of them continued making pottery. I don't believe any are still active today.
Although her pottery was traditional in materials and construction, generally her designs were creations of her own. The checkerboard and stepped designs are repeated four times around the bowl. The double framing lines just under the rim and at the base of the bowl feature ceremonial line breaks. The interior of the bowl is slipped in red clay and stone polished.
The bowl is signed Dora Montoya in pencil. A piece of masking tape placed over the signature repeats the name and adds Santa Ana and the number 65, which may be the date of purchase.
Condition: The bowl is in original condition
Provenance: from the collection of Katherine H. Rust
