Tonita Roybal was a potter early in the beginning of the 20th century, probably started making pottery as early as 1905 and continued until she passed away in 1945. Her earliest documented pot is 1909, located in the Denver Art Museum.
This small black-on-black jar is typical of the work of Tonita and it is signed simply Tonita, a signature she used when she made and painted pottery alone. The writing style of the signature on this jar is tighter than her later signature and is the reason we think it is an early jar by her.
Condition: very good condition with some minor scratches
Provenance: from the collection of a resident of Colorado
