Tse-Pé was the son of Rose Cata Gonzales, who was originally from San Juan Pueblo (now Ohkay Owingeh). She married Robert Gonzales of San Ildefonso and spent her life there. Tse-Pé married Dora, the daughter of Zia potter Candelaria Gachupin, and she moved to San Ildefonso where she still resides.
Early in their career, Dora and Tse-Pé produced pottery together and the pieces were co-signed, as in this jar. Although not dated, it is an earlier one on which they collaborated.
The jar is a beautifully polished one with red slip. Four bear paws were carved into the red slip, leaving a pecked surface as background. Each bear paw has a unique design within its outline. The jar is signed Tse Pe & Dora San Ildefonso. It is not dated.
Condition: this San Ildefonso Red Jar with Bear Paw Sgraffito Design is in good condition with one minor abrasion on one side
Provenance: from the collection of a family from Washington State
