Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Signature of San Ildefonso Pueblo artist Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980) Pond LilyThis small San Ildefonso Pueblo black jar, signed Maria Poveka, is a masterful example of Maria Martinez's iconic work, standing 3-¼ inches tall and measuring 3-¼ inches in diameter — its dimensions forming a perfect square, yet its shape echoes the classic Pueblo storage jar in refined miniature. The near-spherical body is subtly interrupted by a defined shoulder ridge near the opening, adding visual intrigue and complexity to its otherwise minimalist form.

Left unpainted, the jar showcases the rich, deep black finish achieved through traditional firing methods and meticulous stone polishing, likely done by Maria's sister Clara. The unembellished surface invites a full appreciation of its flawless contours and sheen. Created entirely by Maria herself, with firing assistance almost certainly from her son Popovi Da, this piece reflects the collaborative spirit and technical excellence that made Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez — known as Pond Lily — the most celebrated Pueblo potter of the 20th century. A testament to her legacy, this jar is a timeless embodiment of form, tradition, and artistry.
