Popovi Da is credited with developing the gunmetal finish to black pottery. This was achieved in the same firing technique used for blackware but the timing was the crucial factor. He fired the pottery in a hotter firing for a longer period. If removed from the firing too soon, the result would be the regular blackware. If left in too long, it would over-fire and come out dull. Popovi mastered the technique, knowing just how hot to get the fire and just how long to leave it in the fire.
This is a true gunmetal finish on this jar. It was made by Maria, signed Maria Poveka, and the date of manufacture, November 1963, was applied by Popovi Da, who also performed the firing. The vessel shape is one favored by Maria. It is a traditional Tewa water jar shape, made in a smaller version. The rim was finished in a fluted manner, something Maria did occasionally.
Condition: excellent condition with a very few scratches at the rim
Provenance: from the estate of Pat Brannen, formerly of Albuquerque
