This contemporary seed jar by Acoma Pueblo artist Rose Chino Garcia was most likely made in the late 1900s or early 2000s. The large size, symmetrical shape, and intricate design make this jar uniquely graceful. It is banded with ovals and circles filled with varying Mimbres designs over a repeating hexagram geometric pattern.
The band of ovals around the top of the jar is filled with flute players (Kokopelli) and Mimbres female journeywomen. The Kokopelli is a fertility deity. The circles are filled with Mimbres lizards, Kokopelli, and Zuni heartline deer. The Acoma potters borrowed the heartline deer from the Zuni, and it is said to represent life and the spiritual connection to deer.
The jar is signed with the hallmark of the award-winning and collectable Acoma Pueblo pottery artist Rose Chino Garcia. Her pottery is in the collections of the Peabody Museum at Harvard University, Heard Museum in Phoenix, Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, and numerous private collections. She won awards at Santa Fe Indian Market from 1975—one award was for "most creative design." Rose Chino Garcia (1928-2000) and her sisters, Carrie Chino Charlie, Vera Chino Ely and Grace Chino, are daughters of Marie Z. Chino, and all of them are known as exceptional potters, as was their mother.
