Once Known Native American Weaver

The long runner Navajo textile will be called Teec Nos Pos by some and Red Mesa Outline by others. Weavers at Teec Nos Pos had a distinct style of weaving quite similar to the style of the earlier eyedazzler rugs. When the weavers at Teec Nos Pos developed a newer style in the 1910s, the older style became known as Red Mesa Outline. That name derives from the thin line of yarn that outlines each design element. The Red Mesa area of the reservation is about 15 miles west of Teec Nos Pos. This outlining style has been officially recognized as the Red Mesa area rug.

The exciting designs running along each side of the textile are wool in gray, outlined in orange; and red, outlined in black, resulting in elements reminiscent of flames from a fire. The center diamond designs repeat the outlining process, repeating the energetic process of the border designs. At each end of the rug are pairs of eagle feathers, casting a calmness over the other active designs. There is an energy associated with Red Mesa rugs, an energy that is exciting.
